Get started
Turn your photos into a book that's as unique as your memories. A Photo Book is a custom-made book, designed by you, that showcases your photos in a beautiful, professional-quality durable format.

Select and upload photos

Here's how to select photos for your book:

  1. Click on an album name at the left side of the page.
  2. Click on the photo thumbnails at the center of the page to select photos.
    • Once you select a photo, it'll be added to your selected photos at the right
    • To remove it, roll your mouse over the photo in the selected photos area and click on the trash can icon that appears.
  3. To get photos from a different album, click on an album name at the left side of the page.
    • Use the dropdown menu to find photos from your projects or friends' albums.

Snappy tip!

You can automatically use your photos' captions in your photo book. Just check the box next to "Use captions from my albums" found near the bottom left of the page.

Here's how to upload more photos for your book:

  1. Click "Get photos" in the Your Photos tab.
  2. Click the "Upload" button at left. A new window will open for you to start uploading photos.
    • You can add these new photos to either a new or existing album.
  3. Once they've uploaded, they'll appear in the new or existing album you selected.
  4. Open the album they're in and click on the thumbnails to add them to your selected photos.

You can also add photos from Flickr:

  1. Click "Get photos" in the Your Photos tab.
  2. Click the "Flickr" button at left. A new window will open for you to sign in to Flickr and start uploading.
    • You can add these new photos to either a new or existing album.
  3. Once they've uploaded, they'll appear in the new or existing album you selected.
  4. Open the album they're in and click on the thumbnails to add them to your selected photos.

Once you've chosen all of the photos you want to use in your book, click the "Next" button to continue. You can always come back to this step to add or select more photos later - just click on the "Photos" step near the top of the page.

Select your book size and cover

In the next step, you'll choose your photo book's size and cover style. Here's how:

  1. Click on a size - either 12x12, 8x11, 8x8, or 5x7.
  2. Use the dropdown menu beneath the size to choose your cover style.
    • When you choose a cover, you'll see more info about that style at the middle of the page.
  3. When you're ready to move on, click the "Next" button at the top right size of the page.

You can always come back to this step if you decide to change your book's size or cover later - just click on the "Book" step near the top of the page.

When you change sizes, we might have to adjust some photos, designs, and text to fit the pages. Before you order, please review your whole book with an eye for:

  • Photos that have been cropped or resized
  • Adjusted photos that might be low-resolution
  • Page layouts and designs that have been changed
  • Captions and titles that have been cropped or no longer fit
  • Designs that have been removed because they do not fit the new size

You can pick any size, but the recommended sizes and covers are closest to the format of your current book. They'll be the best fit for all of the photos and captions in your book, with the fewest adjustments. For example, changing a 12x12 book to an 8x8 book will require fewer adjustments than changing a 12x12 book to a 5x7 book.

If you change sizes after you've started personalizing your book, we'll save the new size as a copy of the original.

Choose a theme

We've got dozens of unique design themes to complement your photos and help you tell your story. Here's how to choose one:

  1. Click on a theme at the left size of the page.
    • You can use the dropdown menu above the themes to sort them by occasion.
  2. When you choose a theme, you'll see all the different backgrounds that come with it at the middle of the page.
  3. Click on the arrows to the left and right of the sample book to see a larger preview of the different backgrounds.
  4. When you're ready to move on, click the "Next" button at the top right size of the page.

You can always come back to this step if you decide to change your book's theme - just click on the "Theme" step near the top of the page.

Personalize your book

Before you start creating, please note that FreeStyler is only available on hard cover Custom Photo Books in sizes 8x8, 8x11, 12x12, and 11x14 and Premier Lay-flat Photo Books.

Now for the real fun - personalizing and designing your photo book!

Adding photos

Create beautiful pages and covers by adding photos anywhere!

First, you'll be asked if you'd like Autofill to automatically place all of your photos in your book for you. Don't worry, you can always rearrange them again once they've been placed.

Next, click "Photos" on the left side to see all of the photos you've chosen for your book. There are two easy ways to add photos to your pages and covers:

  1. Click on a photo and drag it to any of the empty "Drag photo here" boxes in your photo book.
  2. To add an additional picture to your layout, drag and drop a photo onto any page or cover background.

Note: If you see an orange triangle on a photo you've placed, that means it's low resolution. You can use the photo in your book, but it might look grainy or pixelated in the printed version. We recommend trying a different page layout or using the edit tool to zoom out so the photo is the best resolution for printing.

Removing photos or text

Deleting photos or text is easy. Select the photo or text you want to remove, and when the menu appears below it, click the "X" on the right side to delete it.

Snappy tip!

Changed your mind? Just click "Undo" in the photo book toolbar to have the photo or text added back to the page or cover.

Move, resize, and tilt photos or text

You can easily create the page layouts you want by moving, resizing, and tilting your photos or text.

  1. Click on the photo or text you want to work with.
  2. While the photo or text is selected:
    • Tilt and rotate by holding down the rotate handle above it and turning it.
    • Move the photo or text by dragging it anywhere, including the cover or opposite pages.
    • Resize the photo or text by dragging any of the resize handles in or out.

Snappy tip!

You can nudge your photos anywhere by clicking the arrows keys on your keyboard.

Layer photos

Have more fun by creatively layering photos! You can overlap photos to make custom collages and choose which photos appear in front.

To layer photos, drag and drop photos to a page or cover and arrange them with the move, resize, and tilt features. Then select which photos will be in front by using the menu under that photo. Click the Bring to Front icon or the Send to Back icon to move the photo behind or in front of other images.

Snappy tip!

Text can be put on top of your layered photos.

Shuffle photos

Play around with new possibilities by shuffling your photos!

A shuffle icon appears in the menu at the top of every photo book page or cover. Click the Shuffle icon and watch as your photos move to new positions on the cover or page. You can move, resize, or tilt your photos after any shuffle to customize a layout.

Snappy tip!

Changed your mind? Just click "Undo" button in the photo book toolbar to go back to a previous shuffle layout.

Add embellishments

Here's how to add embellishments to your photo book:

  1. Click on the "Embellishment" tab on the left side. This is in the Personalization section (4) of the photo book creation process.
  2. You can browse all or view according to style and type.
  3. Select the ones you want and drag them to the photo book pages of your choice.

Add more embellishments

To add more embellishments to your project:

  1. Click the "Get more" button in the embellishment section.
  2. View designs by type.
  3. Click the embellishments you want, and then click the "Add to project" button.

Remove embellishments

To remove an embellishment from your photo book, simply drag it off the page or cover. Or click the "X" button.

Snappy tip!

Changed your mind? Just click "Undo" in the photo book toolbar to have your embellishment added back to the page or cover.

Layer embellishments

To make text or photos appear in your embellishments, you can layer them. Here's how:

  1. Select the item you want to layer.
  2. Drag your text box or photo on top of your embellishment and click the "Bring to Front" icon. Clicking the "Bring to Back" icon will layer that item behind.

Embellishments use alignment grids in the same way as photos, and align to photos and other assets.

Move, resize, and rotate embellishments

You can easily customize your embellishments. Here's how to move, resize, and rotate them:

  1. Click on the embellishment you want to customize.
  2. While the embellishment is selected:
    • Move your embellishment by dragging it anywhere on the page.
    • Resize your embellishment by dragging the resize handles out (to make larger) and in (to make smaller). Note: embellishments can be resized but not cropped.
    • Rotate and tilt your embellishment by holding down the rotate handle above it and turning it.

Choose or change page layout

You can change the text and photo layout of any page in your book. (For books with a die-cut window on the cover, you won't be able to change the layout on the first page after the cover.)

  1. Click "Layouts" at the left side of the page, and then click on the type of layout you want to use - Magic layouts, 1 photo, text only, etc.
  2. Click on a layout and drag it onto your book. Replace a layout any time with another layout.

Magic layouts

Collage any page with up to 15 photos and turn a regular page into a Magic page! Discover new page layouts to beautifully highlight your photos.

On the left side, click on "Page Layouts" and then select "Magic layouts." Select a Magic layout and drag it to a page. You can design one page at a time and try different Magic layouts.

You can also apply a Magic layout to the whole photo book by selecting "Apply to all" in the Magic layout's drop-down menu.

To change a photo arrangement on a Magic page, click "Shuffle" in the page menu. To go back to a previous arrangement, click "Undo" at the top left of the book builder.

Choose or change backgrounds

  1. If you want to change a background for a page, click "Themes" at the left side of the page.
  2. Click on the theme you want to use and drag it onto your book.
  3. To find more styles, click "Get more themes."
  4. Click on a design to select it, and it'll be added to your selected designs. Click "Add this theme" to your theme selection panel; one at a time.
  5. Click "Apply" for theme in entire book.

Adding text

Have fun with words by adding as many text boxes as you want to a page or cover. You can even put text on top of your pictures. Choose from 20 stylish fonts in over 200 different colors.

There are two ways to add text:

  1. To add standalone text, click the "T" icon that appears in the menu above every photo book page and cover. A text box will be added to the middle of the page or cover and you can move it wherever you like.
  2. To add a caption to a photo, click on the "T" icon that appears in the menu under any selected photo. This text box is connected to the photo. You can move, resize, or tilt the text into any position, but if you move the photo, the caption will move with it.

Snappy tip!

You can resize the text box to fit more text.

Editing text

To edit text, select the text box you want to change. You can either click on the Edit Text icon in the menu below it or double click on the text box itself. Both actions will open the Edit Text window.

Choose the font, size, color, and text alignment. The maximum number of characters allowed will depend on the font size and the size of the text box. Click "Apply changes" to return to the photo book.

Please note that for now, only one font type and one font color can be used per text box.

Snappy tip!

Layer text boxes together in the same font to create dimension. Make the top font one color and the back font a darker hue.

The safe area

Please note that any text or photos that fall outside of the printable area may be trimmed and may not appear in the book you order. For best results, keep your photos and text inside the dashed red lines on every page and cover.

  • Click the "Save" icon at the top left side of the page or cover to save your book at any time. If you need to leave and finish it later, you'll be able to find it in your saved projects.
